SWAY_OVERALL.jpg

Sway

Sway is an architectural folly, intended to materialize the ephemeral qualities of light and the sound through thousands of plastic bags. The wind gently moves the lattice of pipes and rustles the bags, creating a visual and audible experience, and light is filtered through the to create a gradient. As one moves through the pavilion, the perforated wood flooring also creates a literal "sway" throughout the structure. Two different paths and incorporated seating allow for different speeds of inhabitation, inviting people to pause.

A team effort, this pavilion was a result of GSAPP's Fast Pace Slow Space Tech Elective, taught by Mark Bearak and Brigette Borders. Team members include: Ben Brennan, Emily Bult, Rebecca Dale, Alan Paukman, Buzz Wei, Margaret Zyro, and the wonderful John Barnes, to whom this is dedicated.
